The following are answers to Frequently Asked Questions about
the UConn Proxy Accounts. These contain pertinent information
all users will need to know about obtaining, using, and maintaining
their Proxy Accounts. These pages will be updated frequently
by the Helpdesk as further questions are asked by the community.

- Do I need to be on campus for my Proxy
Account to work?
- No. In fact, proxy accounts are only for off-campus
use. The proxy account allows outside ISPs to simulate
connected via the UConn domain (137.99). This feature
is what allows users to get to UConn secure sites while
off campus.
- What Internet Service Providers will my
Proxy Account work with?
- Proxy services work with all Internet Service Providers.
However, it is important to note that the Proxy will
not work with ISPs needing a Firewall or another proxy.
This is the case with most office/work connections off
campus.
- Will my Account work with a Proprietary
(AOL, Juno, etc...) Browser?
- No. AOL, Juno, and other ISP packages group their
product with a proprietary version of Internet Explorer.
This browser is not able to authenticate through proxy
protocols. If your computer has a version of Internet
Explorer of this type, please either download a valid
version of Internet
Explorer from Microsoft or download Netscape
Communicator.
- Do I need Netscape for the Proxy to work?
- No. Both Netscape and Internet Explorer work with
the Proxy account, as do most unsupported browsers (Opera,
Mozilla, Konquerer, etc...). However, due to the proprietary
issues explained above, Netscape has been found to be
more stable on all computing systems with the Proxy
services.
- How do I configure the Proxy in IE or Netscape?
- Configuration is actually very simple. Just go to
the Proxy
Configuration web page and follow the step-by-step
instructions for Manual setup. The
Helpdesk has included instructions spanning a wide variety
of browsers to accomodate all people using the proxy
services.
- What UConn systems will the Proxy give
me access to?
- Having a UConn Proxy account allows all members of
the UConn Community to access any UConn related websites
from an off-campus site. For example, the proxy account
gives access to all of the databases on the UConn
Library website and to the file downloads
on the FTP
server.
